Saree Care

A tussar saree outlives the person who buys it, if it is looked after.

Cleaning
Dry clean only, by a cleaner who handles silk regularly. Never machine wash, never wring, never bleach.
Storage
Store folded in the muslin bag it arrived in, in a cool, dark, dry place. Cotton or muslin lets the silk breathe; plastic traps moisture and yellows it.
Refolding
Refold along a different line every few months so the fibre never creases permanently in one place.
Light
Keep it out of direct sunlight. Sun fades natural dye and weakens silk over years, not decades.
Zari
Keep metallic zari away from moisture and perfume. Wrap the pallu in a separate strip of muslin if the border is heavily worked.
Wearing
Perfume and deodorant go on before the saree, never onto it. Blot spills, never rub.
