Saree Care
A tussar saree outlives the person who buys it, if it is looked after.
- Cleaning
- Dry clean only, by a cleaner who handles silk regularly. Never machine wash, never wring, never bleach.
- Storage
- Store folded in the muslin bag it arrived in, in a cool, dark, dry place. Cotton or muslin lets the silk breathe; plastic traps moisture and yellows it.
- Refolding
- Refold along a different line every few months so the fibre never creases permanently in one place.
- Light
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. Sun fades natural dye and weakens silk over years, not decades.
- Zari
- Keep metallic zari away from moisture and perfume. Wrap the pallu in a separate strip of muslin if the border is heavily worked.
- Wearing
- Perfume and deodorant go on before the saree, never onto it. Blot spills, never rub.
